Fashion Color Trends: Embrace or Avoid?

Tangerine, coral, mint green, peach… we’re in love with the trendy colors of 2013, but not everyone can pull them off.

Ashley McKinnon, owner of Valshi Boutique, has the wardrobe dos and don’ts based on your skin tone.

Warm or Cool Test:
There are a few ways to determine your skin tone. The two easiest ways are the wrist test and the silver/gold test.

Wrist Test:
In natural light (during the day, stand by an open window or outside), make a fist and examine your inner wrist. What color are your veins? Veins that are mainly blue are a sign of cool tones, while green veins are a hint that you are warm toned.

Silver/Gold Test:
It’s a little known fact that warm and cold and gold and silver go hand in hand. If you can, find a piece of silver fabric and a piece of gold fabric. Stand in front of the mirror and hold each piece of the fabric up to your face, one at a time. If the silver makes your face light up, you are most likely cool toned. If the gold makes you look fresh and alive, you are probably warm toned.

Now that you have your skin tone figured out, we can help you find colors that make you look your best!

The color wheel can help us know which colors will look best on us. Have you ever seen “The Blindside”? When Sandra Bullock’s character says “I will not wear that gaudy orange. I will not. It is not in my color wheel and I’m not going to wear it.” That is one of my favorite lines and it shows that she knows what colors work for her and which colors don’t. We need to be the same way and be a little more selective about what we put on. Have you ever gone to your closet and noticed that you have so many of the same colors over and over? And you think to yourself “I need to add some different colors to my wardrobe”. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. You know what looks good and you continue to buy it. Today we can help you find what colors look good on your skin type with the color wheel and that there are a lot of them! So now you can expand your wardrobe colors but do it the right way and not spend money on clothing in colors that are not flattering and you end up donating or giving away.

Who Can Wear the Color Trends of 2013

IVORY SKIN WITH PINK UNDERTONES
(usually dark hair)
Don’t wear peach, tangerine, orange, or yellow.
Do wear blue or mint.

Light colors such as peach and light pink are not good for fair-skinned women. But you can still accessorize with these colors. This skin color CAN wear coral if she sticks with a coral with more pink instead of orange. This skin tone looks great in mint and blue.

PALE SKIN WITH YELLOW UNDERTONES
(usually blonde or red head)
Don’t wear brown or orange.
Do wear royal blue, Kelly green, or purple.

Women with pale complexions should stick with blues, greens, and purples. She can wear coral and mint in more pastel colors. Too dark or neon colors will wash them out.

OLIVE SKIN WITH WARM UNDERTONES
Don’t wear neon colors like hot pink, or muted colors, like black or navy.
Do wear reds and warmer yellows.

Olive-skinned individuals for the most part look good in anything, but should stay away from really bright colors such as neon and muted colors such as black or navy. Colors like red or mustard yellow will show off how great their skin looks in warmer tones.

Overall, cool-toned skin (winter) looks better in cooler colors and warm-toned skin (summer) looks better in warm colors.
