4 Mindset Shifts to Help You Get Unstuck

Defusing Negative Beliefs

The first step in the DARE method is “defuse.” Many of us hold onto unhealthy beliefs that hinder our progress. Matt shared his personal experience of wanting to write a book but being held back by thoughts like “no one will want to read it” and “it’s too hard.” To break free, you need to recognize and defuse these limiting beliefs. Accept that these thoughts exist, but don’t let them control your actions. Instead, focus on counterarguments and remind yourself that you’ve done it before and can do it again.

Accepting Discomfort

The second step is “accepting discomfort.” Understand that discomfort is a natural part of any creative endeavor. Whether you’re writing a book, pursuing a career change, or starting a new project, discomfort will be your companion. Embrace it as a sign of growth rather than a barrier. Matt emphasized that getting used to the fact that discomfort is a part of the process is crucial for achieving your goals.

Realistic Goal Setting

The “realistic goal setting” aspect of the DARE method is all about setting attainable objectives. Avoid overwhelming yourself with ambitious goals that can lead to frustration. Instead, break your larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks. Matt gave the example of writing a book: instead of aiming to write a whole chapter in a week, focus on writing 400 words a day. Achieving these smaller goals will build momentum and confidence.

Embracing Your Values

Finally, “embracing your values” is about connecting your goals to your deeper emotional values. Matt explained that it’s essential to understand why your goal matters to you on a personal level. Whether it’s being the family historian or leaving a lasting impact through your work, connecting to your values will provide the motivation and purpose needed to keep pushing forward.

The DARE method is a powerful tool for getting unstuck in any aspect of your life. By defusing negative beliefs, accepting discomfort, setting realistic goals, and embracing your values, you can overcome the obstacles that have been holding you back. Remember that progress might not always be smooth, but with determination and the DARE method, you can turn your creative dreams into reality.
