Layers Cakes: Edible Artwork

Julie Hill is a local cake decorator, with Layers who has learned the tricks of creating the masterpieces.

One Utah baker has turned sugar, flour and eggs into Louis Vuitton bags, cowboy boots, a Ferrari and a briefcase with $100 bills in it. Julie Hill, designer and baker extraordinaire, started Layers, a cake business where she designs and bakes custom-made cakes in her Bountiful home studio. “My cakes are perfect for baby showers, bridal showers, birthdays or any other occasion when you need the ‘wow’ factor for a cake,” says Hill.

Layers’ customers play a big role in the final product. They work closely with Hill in developing the look and taste of their cake. No design is out of the ordinary for Hill. “Although I’ve had the opportunity to do some really elaborate and beautiful wedding cakes, I think I have the most fun recreating food items such as hot dogs, candy and even sushi. I also like recreating fashion items such as purses and shoes,” says Hill.

Hill received a law degree from the University California Berkeley. She practiced law for eight years, but always loved to bake. She says that even though she enjoyed practicing law, she really always felt that baking was her true passion. So, in 2008, she started Layers. “Designing and baking cakes is what I love to do. I am so happy to be doing what I’m doing,” Hill says.

Layers’ basic designs range from $4.50 to $5 per serving and there is a minimum price of $100 for a cake. So generally speaking, this means a sculpted cake would start at $100 and go from there depending upon the complexity of the design and the size of the cake. Delivery is free within a 20-mile radius.

At Layers, Hill says she tries to accommodate everyone’s tastes and requests. There are several flavor combinations on the Web site (www.layers-cake.com) to choose from and although there can be some limitations due to structural issues, Hill says she can generally find something for everyone. First, the customer goes to Layers for a tasting to decide what he or she likes, then the customer and Hill develop a sketch together.

At Layers, different times of the year are busier than others, but the schedule tends to fill up about one month in advance. However, Hill encourages anyone to call Layers with last-minute orders. She says she’ll do everything she can to accommodate an order if possible.

If you are interested in ordering a cake from Layers, Hill’s home studio is located at 277 Hidden Lake Dr. in Bountiful (by appointment only), the telephone number is (801)699-5987, and the Web site is www.layers-cake.com
