Pillow Design 101

Pillows possess an ability to rejuvenate any living space. Whether you aim to refresh your color scheme, add a cozy atmosphere, or prepare for a new season, the right pillows can work wonders.

Choosing the Perfect Pillow

Where do you start when hunting for the ideal pillow? Alicia suggests keeping an eye out for textures and colors that resonate with your mood and the season. For example, as the weather cools down, cozy textures like boucle, which makes you want to curl up with a cup of hot chocolate on the couch, can be just the thing you’re looking for.

Patterns and Pairing

As you look for the perfect pillow ensemble, a good rule of thumb is to start with a solid color as the base. It can be placed anywhere in your arrangement. To add depth and character, introduce a floral pattern as your second layer. Then, bring in a smaller-scale pattern to avoid clashing.

Alicia also highlights that all the patterns should complement each other. While discussing the key to a harmonious look, she emphasizes the importance of cohesiveness. As you browse for pillows, you’ll find that many designs carry the same color schemes, making it easier to put together a stylish combination.

Size and Scale

Choosing the right pillow size can make or break your design. Alicia says that pillows of varying sizes work best, as they collaborate rather than compete for attention. For example, pairing a 24×24-inch pillow with a 20×20-inch one and a mini lumbar pillow is a winning formula.

Inserts Matter

Quality inserts are crucial. A combination of feather and down offers comfort and durability. These inserts don’t get lumpy or poke through the fabric, ensuring your pillows stay plump and cozy over the years. With quality inserts, you don’t need to hoard piles of pillows; you can simply store different covers and switch them out for the seasons.

Stuffing Technique

When it comes to stuffing your pillow covers, Alicia has a trick to ensure a perfect fit. Fold the insert in half and then push it into the cover. This technique ensures it reaches every nook and cranny, giving your pillows a beautifully full and even appearance.

Fall Color Trends

As for the color trends for fall, Alicia recommends exploring muted tones like mustard and soft oranges. Rather than sticking with plain solids, consider mixing and matching patterns and textures to create a dynamic and inviting look.

Don’t underestimate the impact that these small yet mighty home accessories can have on your space. With the right combinations, textures, and sizes, you can breathe new life into your home’s interior and create a cozy and stylish haven for yourself. Happy pillow shopping!
