Salt-a-Peel Microdermabrasion

Dr. Steve Jepson with The Spa at the Utah Dermatologic & Medical Procedures Clinic tells us about macrodermabrasion.

We are excited to introduce a new procedure into our clinic called Salt-A-Peel Macrodermabrasion. I’m sure that many of you have heard of microdermabrasion. It’s one of the most popular aesthetic procedures in the country and has been around for a number of years. The concept involves using various methods to “rub off” a very superficial layer of skin. This outer layer of skin (called the stratum corneum) is comprised of old skin cells that your body is slowly discarding anyway. Dermabrasion helps speed that process along. The most common systems include a vacuum tube which pulls crystals of aluminum oxide across the skin. If done regularly, microdermabrasion treatments can result in smoother, brighter, healthier-looking skin.

Macrodermabrasion with Salt-a-Peel takes those basic principles several steps further. This is how it’s different:

First of all, it uses natural sea salt. This is better for a couple of reasons. The healing properties of salt have been known for thousands of years. By using natural salt, the procedure has an anti-septic, anti-inflammatory effect on your skin, plus the salt crystals will draw out toxins and impurities in your skin. At the same time, natural salt is far less irritating than the aluminum crystals and the other “abraders” used in traditional microdermabrasion. Consequently, the procedure is very well-tolerated with very little post-treatment redness or irritation.

Second, rather than using a vacuum to pull (or suck) crystals across the skin at a 90 degree angle, macrodermabrasion blows the salt crystals across the skin at a 25 degree angle. This may sound like an inconsequential difference, but it’s makes a huge difference from the standpoint of skin physics. By using this particular delivery method, Salt-A-Peel macrodermabrasion can remove much more unwanted skin in a single treatment than traditional microdermabrasion. This means that one Macrodermabrasion treatment accomplishes as much as three microdermabrasion treatments. And blowing crystals across the skin is far less irritating than vacuuming (sucking) crystals across the skin – another reason that this procedure can accomplish more with less irritation and redness.
Third, a Salt-a-Peel macrodermabrasion treatment not only includes the “abrasion” but finishes with a facial Ultrasound treatment. Immediately after macrodermabrasion, the skin is especially receptive to skin care products. The barrier of dead skin cells that slows the delivery of vitamins and other nutrients into the deeper skin layers has been briefly removed. To take advantage of this, we apply a vitamin-rich mask and use the sound waves generated by a specially designed Ultrasound device to push those nutrients even deeper into your skin. The final result is amazing! Smooth, supple, healthy, bright-looking skin.

Salt-A-Peel treatments are affordable and offer a great way to tune up your skin for the upcoming Holidays. We generally recommend at least three treatments space every 2-3 weeks for optimal results. We are currently running a special for Studio 5 viewers through the end of the month – One treatment for $95 or A Package of Three for $240. So hurry and schedule your appointment today!
