It’s a quest many of us try to conquer each and every January…the goal to be more healthy. Most people assume good health comes down to just two simple actions: eating and exercise. So if it’s really that easy, why do so many of us fall short year after year?
It’s a question Oprah answers in this month’s issue of O Magazine. The headline reads: “How did I let this happen again?” After achieving a slim and trim 160-pound figure back in 2005, Oprah talks candidly about the anger and embarrassment she’s currently experiencing after, in her words, falling off the wagon and tipping the scale to more than 200 pounds.
The problem? Oprah writes:
“What I’ve learned is that my weight issue isn’t about eating less or working out harder – it’s about my life being in balance… my focus this year will be on how to achieve optimum health, get support when I need it, find ways to nurture myself, deepened my spiritual connection – and have some fun.”
It’s that same philosophy we hope to embrace all this month on Studio 5, with our new January theme: Be Healthy.
Melanie Douglass, Studio 5 Health & Fitness Contributor: “January is a great time to focus on your health and your fitness one day at a time. So think about how easy this is to achieve. Wake up January 1st and say to yourself. I’m going to do one thing for my healthy today and you do it. And then you do it again on January 2nd. You may have a few bad days, but you can have a fresh start at any moment you choose. Health is not a look. It’s not a number on the bathroom scale. It’s not a size of clothing. Good Healthy is really just a lifestyle. It’s how you eat and how much you exercise most of the time. Good health is how you feel.”
Dr. Liz Hale, Studio 5 Family & Relationships Contributor: “We hear so much about the pursuit of happiness bit there are some days I’m not so happy – it’s a fleeting emotion – but I’m very attracted to the pursuit of healthiness. So regardless of how I feel, I still need to choose healthy emotions, healthy decisions, healthy actions and why I may not be happy at least I will have a greater peace of mind. You know, life is so darn fast paced! It’s as if we’re traveling down the up the down escalator and you have to keep going and if you don’t keep going what happens? You start go backward. There really is no standing still. So, January is a great time to start the year off right by finding ways to keep climbing up the down escalator…so life doesn’t keep passing us by.”
