Summer Style: Do’s and Don’ts

Emily McCormick with Shabby Apple reviews a few “summer do’s and don’ts”—easy principles that will help you pull together sassy, stylish summer outfits!

Summer Style: DON’T

DON’T: Be too “matchy-matchy”

-Avoid too many items of the same color. Pink shoes and pink belt paired with a pink handbag—looks like you’re trying too hard. Summer collections make this super-easy for people to do. Just remember: it’s super cute when you’re little girl is wearing Hawaiian pants, with a Hawaiian hat and matching sandals…NOT as cute when you’re doing it!

DON’T: Show midriff

-This is a tacky expression, no matter your age or body! There’s really no way to get around this one. If you have great abs; save them for the beach. The street isn’t the place to be showing them off.

DON’T: Go too tan or too orange

-Everyone wants to be tan in the summer. The key is knowing how much is enough. Fake baking is bad for your skin, so you need to know what your alternatives are; then don’t overdo it. There are so many tanning creams and spray-on tans now that you just need to spend the time figuring out which one works for your skin tone.

DON’T: Wear short-shorts

-Short-shorts are fine for younger girls (under the age of fifteen), but past the teenage years, you’re definitely NOT looking classy. Fashion isn’t about showing everything you have…it’s about being creative and accentuating your features. The idea is to age gracefully.

Summer Style: DO’S

DO: Wear white pants

-This “do” comes with a disclaimer—make sure they’re the right fit! Avoid white pants that are so tight they show your underwear line. White jeans are actually back, so go ahead and wear them. Great for dress-up events.

-Pair them with: basically anything. White pants are great with every color and most styles. You can wear cropped pants, wide-legged, jeans, dressy, casual…whatever. White is always in for summer.

DO: Wear summer dresses with sandals
-Dresses are fabulous for summer because they’re so much cooler than pants

-You can go ultra-casual with an easy-cotton jersey knit dress. Dress doesn’t mean it has to be ‘dressy.’ So, remember you can wear it like you’d wear casual shorts and a t-shirt. To the beach, to the playground, to the mall, etc.

-Pair it with a pair of flip-flops and a baseball cap. Or you can go dressier with a big belt and high-heeled sandals.

DO: Change your purse to a light summer purses.

-You can go with a fun floral purse, a canvas purse, etc. You can make it as big as you want to be able to pack around a water bottle, sunscreen, whatever you need. Remember, it’s super easy to change your handbag. It marks you as seasonal and makes you a little more trendy.

DO: Wear your hair up with a scarf.

-This is a super cute trend. You can wear it like a headband, wrapped around a pony tail or go for it and wear it like Grace Kelly did, with a pair of big hoop earrings.

DO: Get a new pair of sunglasses each summer.

-Sunglasses are an inexpensive way to make a statement. You don’t need the most expensive brands, just a cheap pair. (I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I’ve ever had a pair longer than a year anyway. I’m always sitting on them, leaving them at a store, something). Anyhow, this season, keep them BIG. And, even if you’re going with a cheap pair, make sure they have UV protection. Again, switch it up because sunglasses make a statement.
