Tie Dye to Die For

Amber Hansen is offering a special workshop at the Ogden Nature Center and has been tie dying for years. She know the best way to tie dye with success.

Choose dye-able items made from natural fibers like cotton or rayon (synthetic fabrics like polyester do not accept dye)

1. Wear your dust mask and dissolve 1 cup (8 oz.) of soda ash fixer per gallon of warm water. Soak the garments about 5-15 minutes (until saturated). You can reuse this solution until it’s gone. While fabric is soaking start mixing dyes.

2. Using your dust mask and gloves, combine a little hot water with Urea for each color. Add this solution to the powdered dye gradually, pasting it up to avoid lumps. When smooth, add the remaining water. Use a funnel to pour mixed dyes into squeeze bottles. Set aside till ready to dye.

3. Wearing an apron and gloves remove garment from soda ash solution and wring out (over the bucket so you can reuse the solution) until just damp-not dripping. Fold and tie the fabric into the desired patterns securing the fabric with elastics or a needle and thread.

4. On a surface covered in plastic (outside is good) start to apply dye to the tied garment by injecting the nozzle of the squeeze bottle into the fabric folds. Make sure to open up some of the folds to make sure the dye is getting deep into the fabric.

5. Put fabric (still tied) in a zip-top plastic bag (the idea is to keep it wet and chemically active) and let it sit for at least 4 hours but preferably 24 hours to “cure”.

6. Remove from bag and while still tied, rinse off the excess dye under cold running water (faucet, hose or shower). Remove all the elastics and/or gathers and continue rinsing until the water runs fairly clear. Have your washing machine pre-filled with detergent and hot water and throw in the clothing as soon as it is rinsed, running it through a full cycle.

Enjoy! The color is permanent and colorfast. After running through the washer a few times it is safe to wash with your regular laundry. (Don’t use bleach)

Dye Formula:

• 8 oz. cup of warm water
(not hot, body temperature)

• 2 to 8 teaspoons of Procion Dye
(depending on the color of dye, most dye use 2 teaspoons,
some require more dye to reach full intensity)

• 1 tablespoon Urea
(dissolve in a little hot water first).

To clean up, simply pour excess dye and soda ash solution down the drain, clean dishes and applicators with dish soap and water.
