United Way Presents The Power of the Purse

Paulette V. Cary, WPN Event Chair talks about the Women’s Philanthropic Network

Join members of the Women’s Philanthropic Network for an inspirational evening celebrating our 5th Anniversary of fantastic friendships, fabulous food, and precious prizes. Hear from Brazilian immigrant Carlos Falchi, internationally acclaimed designer of modern, cutting-edge handbags and accessories.

The United Way WPN, Power of the Purse event this year is on October 28 at 6:00 pm at Little America. The special speaker for the evening is Carlos Falchi, who is an immigrant from Brazil. He came to the U. S. in the ‘60s, and spoke no English and worked in low-wage jobs. His talent is working in leather. He designed his own belts and leather pants. He was working as a dishwasher in a restaurant in New York and was wearing one of his own creations. Miles Davis saw what he was wearing and asked if he could make some things for him. The rest, as they say, is history. He began designing clothing and accessories and has since specialized in handbags. His designs now sell for between $3,000 and $5,000 at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. He has pieces on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. His is a true success story.

The Women’s Philanthropic Network supports United Way of Salt Lake’s Immigrant and Refugee Integration and Welcome Centers that are working to build vibrant, secure, and cohesive communities.
