Cruisin’ the Boulevard Coats for Kids Car Show

Wendel Burt, from Burt Brothers, explains some of the attractions at the annual event.

Elementary school Principals in cooperation with the teachers and the PTA identify children in need of winter clothing from the Bountiful area schools. Once a child is identified, the principal presents a voucher to the parents. With the voucher, the child and parents can go to the Woods Cross K-Mart Store and pick out a new coat, boots and mittens. Since our first Car Show in 1998 over 4000 children have received new winter coats, boots and mittens.

Burt Brothers Tires & Service is sponsoring the Bountiful Rotary Club’s 11th Anniversary of “Cruisin’ the Boulevard-Coats for Kids” Car Show again this year. “When an employee said he had seen at least five kids without coats, dropping his kids off at school everyday, we knew we had to support this event,” said owner, Wendel Burt.

The “Coats for Kids” Car Show is the means by which the Bountiful Rotary Club supports their mission of providing for the needs of children in South Davis County.

According to Ron Burt, owner of Burt Brother’s Tires, “We, and other Rotarians, donate all the food, prizes and cover the expenses of the car show so all proceeds can go to keeping kids warm.” “Over 4000 children in the South Davis Area, have been served, with funds from this event, over the past 10 years,” Mr. Burt continued.

Winter of 2007-2008 saw over $17,000 in vouchers redeemed by children in the community for new coats, boots and gloves. Vouchers are distributed to families identified by principals and teachers from local elementary schools. Parents take their children to the local K-Mart store and let them pick the coat of their choice, which is paid for with the voucher.

How you can support this great event is by registering a cool car or just coming and enjoying the cars, eating lots of food and drinks, participate in the drawings, games and contests, remember all the money raised goes directly to the kids.

Friday Night the Cruisin’ Parade and Street Party begin at 6:00 PM along old Historic Main Street and ends at 10:00 pm. Cars will be displayed along the street and there will be a variety of activities for the whole family, including a Main Street Car Parade at 6:30 PM, lots of good food, a pie eating contest sponsored by Marie Calendar’s, a climbing wall, and live music by the “Go Dog Go” Band. “We thought we’d add a little excitement this year,” said Ron Burt, “by sponsoring a Tire Burnout contest.” Many Bountiful Main Street merchants will be open for business Friday night with specials just for the evening’s activities.

We invite everyone to come and enjoy this great event on Friday night, June 12, and Saturday June 13, 2009 at the Bountiful City Park. Online registration is at www.bountifulrotary.com or by calling Chris at 292-6141 or John at 856-9897.
