We asked two popular artists: “How has music changed your life?”
There is a documentary on Disney Plus titled Music by John Williams, celebrating the man behind some of the most iconic film scores in history. From Star Wars to Harry Potter, John Williams’ music has been the soundtrack of our lives.
John Williams has composed music for a wide array of films, each score capturing the essence of the story it accompanies. “Music for a musician is like breathing. It supports us, sustains us, gives us energy.” he said.
This movie trailer inspired us to ask musicians we admire the question, “When was a time music changed your life?”
Bri Ray Aupiu: Overcoming Shyness Through Music
Bri recounted how music helped her overcome extreme shyness. “I was born super shy… to the point like I couldn’t talk to someone I didn’t know without crying.” Through recording albums and performing, Bri found her voice and confidence. She even used her earnings to support children’s education in Cambodia, demonstrating music’s power to inspire and drive positive change.
Emma Nissen: Finding Purpose in Music
Emma shared a pivotal moment in high school when her choir teacher introduced her to Ella Fitzgerald’s live performance of “How High the Moon.” This experience revealed to her that music is a conversation, a way to connect with others. “It’s a conversation meant to be had with other people,” Emma explained. This realization guided her through college and beyond.
The Universal Language of Music
Both Bri and Emma highlighted that music is an outward experience meant to be shared. “If you allow music to take you out of yourself, it does become a different experience,” said Emma.
